History

Southern California Garden Club was founded June 13, 1927 in Van Nuys. It is a charter member of California Garden Clubs, Inc. which first organized in 1931. The club was founded with the goals of stimulating knowledge and love of gardening and encouraging beautification and protection of the environment on a local and statewide basis. In 1993, the club moved its permanent meeting location from Van Nuys to the Sepulveda Garden Center in Encino. Southern California Garden Club was instrumental in the establishment of the Garden Center and is a member of the San Fernando Valley Garden Center Association.

Meetings

The club meets on the third Tuesday of each month from September through June at 10:00 A.M. A typical meeting includes a business session, horticulture and/or floral design workshop, program and lunch. Programs feature guest speakers on a variety of gardening subjects including native flora and fauna, floral design, horticulture and conservation. While the Sepulveda Garden Center is under renovation, meetings are held at the American Red Cross Center , 14717 Sherman Way , Van Nuys. Prior to meetings, members bring plants, bulbs and cuttings from their gardens and useful “white elephants” for sale as club fundraising. Once or twice a year, in lieu of a meeting, the club sponsors a tour.

Projects Supported

The club maintains memberships in the San Fernando Valley Garden Center Association, the Theodore Payne Foundation, Descanso Gardens, The Nature Conservancy and TreePeople. It supports projects of the San Fernando Valley District and California Garden Clubs, Inc. (including the eagle project at Baldwin Lake Preserve, native flora and Penny Pines). The club sponsors an annual flower show and has four flower show judges as members. The club awards an annual scholarship to a student of horticulture or landscaping, commemorates Arbor Day with a tree planting, provides floral arrangements for the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Hospital and supports youth programs among its other activities.
