Veronica or "Speedwell"
Veronica or "Speedwell"
Denverplants

Native to: Europe to Russia and East Asia

Useful as: A small to medium filler flower.

Longevity: 5 - 7 days depending on bud stage.

Dries well: No

Available: Year round with breaks in supply.

General Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Veronica fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold water keeping the water level near the top of the vase.

Re-cut 1/2" from the base of each Veronica stem under water using a sharp knife with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become submerged after re-cutting.

Variety note: Veronica is available in two colors, blue (pictured) and pink. Veronica is often times confused with Lysmachia which looks very similar except it has white flowers. Veronica is available nearly year round and sold in 10 stem bunches. When using Veronica in vase arrangements be sure to remove any foliage that may be below the water line to prevent bacteria formation in the water.

The Veronica family contains about 250 varieties of annuals and perennials, many are zone 4 hardy and can be cultivated in your flower garden for harvesting for fresh filler flowers. Veronica is one of the few flowers that have a blue hued blossom.

Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or FloraLife to the vase that contains your Veronica with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacterial growth, aids in keeping vase water clear, and feeds your flowers foliages insuring a longer vase life.

To make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
